Bootstrap: Expressions + Equations

Bootstrap:Expressions + Equations is an integrated curricular module where students explore the laws of arithmetic, applying a lens of computational thinking to tackle common challenges faced in grades 4-9 math.

Build Algebra-Readiness
Algebra is critical to students’ high school graduation – but it's also where many students give up. In Expressions + Equations, our playful and creative approach to arithmetic instruction provides students with a smooth onramp to algebraic thinking, emphasizing that math can be flexible, intuitive, and fun! You've seen students make seemingly-silly mistakes when solving or simplifying equations – the materials in this curriculum are designed to address that exact problem, by teaching a structural approach to core topics like Order of Operations, Commutativity and Associativity, Distribution, Exponents, and more

Programming if you want it, unplugged if you don’t.
If programming is “just like math”, then shouldn’t we be able to take the math we already teach and use it to teach programming? Why do we have to throw out our books and start over? Bootstrap:Expressions + Equations can be used entirely unplugged, and no programming experience is required. But for those who want it, the curriculum includes lightweight computing content that explores those same algebraic concepts using computer graphics (e.g. - Is rotation associative? Does scaling distribute?). These computing activities are also thoughtfully designed to provide a bridge to more advanced computing in Bootstrap:Algebra, Bootstrap:Data Science, and more…all the way to college.

Aligned to National & State Standards
We provide complete lesson plans, student materials, software, and teacher-training workshops. Our lessons are aligned to various state and national standards, and we continually assess our impact on student math achievement. Tens of thousands of students across the country have found success with Bootstrap implemented in middle and high school math classes, IT/CS classes, media classes, standalone electives, and afterschool programs.
